Paying It Forward
5 yrs ago when I was at the hotel recovering from my gastric bypass (had in Honolulu and we live on big island so we had to wait til after 2 w check up to be able to fly home) an older man (he was Hare Krishna) was talking story with husband and I while sitting at pool while son swam and I was getting some much needed fresh air.
After talking for a few hours he handed us 20.00 and said “go buy yourselves dinner on me all i ask is pay it forward.”
It took us a while to do it BUT 4 yrs later we finally found the opportunity and did just that..we were on the bus heading to town. I was still wearing my binder cause I had just had a full hysterectomy (hmm i am seeing a surgery theme here lol) anyhow this young lady in a wheel chair was sitting in the seat up front, where we were having to stand because the bus was sooo packed. As it usually is on Saturdays (which is why I hate going on a sat and do everything I can to avoid it at all costs lol as you can tell from pic its a small bus).
This young lady was not more then 18 years old. You could tell she had both physical and mental handicaps. But she was such a sweet young lady. She was full of life and laughter. She cracked jokes she asked me if I was OK cause she had seen my binder (which is what started off our conversation) She asked if y husband was my boyfriend and I said no he is my husband and then she was telling me how Justin Beiber was her boyfriend. He giggle was infectious when my husband said something silly and I smacked him. She told us we were funny. This young lady was just so much fun to talk to. She was absolutely ADORABLE! We were so impressed but just how full of life and joy she was. You could tell she was dealt a bad deck of cards in life. So little did we now that when we got off the bus at the same time as her what was gonna happen next. husband and I went and did some errands that we had to go do and we decided to go over to Ihop and have a lunch date that we rarely get to do.
And there she was sitting there having lunch with her nurse. So we called our server over and asked her to tell their server we wanted to take care of their bill. It just so happened to be she was their server as well. She had said she had never seen someone do this before. I asked for a piece of paper where I wrote a short note that read:
“Thanks for the great talk on the bus. You are a sweet young lady and hope you stay that way.Enjoy you lunch it is on us Many hugs your new friends from the bus Kelly and Dawn”
I seen her nurse ask for the bill and seen on the corner of my eye her reaction when she read it. The nurse pointed us out and before they left they came up to us. Her nurse said thank you so much it was a nice thing to do and the little girl goes “you paid our lunch??” And we told her yes mamm we sure did cause you are one adorable young lady! The nurse then told us it meant even more cause the little girl does not get out of the house that often and they had just happened to go out that day cause she was having a god day health wise *she had tubes in her neck even). It made us happy to see such a big smile on her face. It was differently a rewarding pay it forward! I recommend it as it feels great!
Words of advice…Go do something nice and pay it forward to someone near you!
